Proposed judges face parliamentary hearing

Kathmandu, July 27: Six persons recommended for the Supreme Court judges by the Judicial Council faced parliamentary hearing on Wednesday.

The Legislature-Parliament's Special Hearing Committee conducted the hearing for five chief judges and a senior advocate for the Appellate Court.

Those appearing before the Special Committee are judges Dipak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Sharada Prasad Ghimire, Mira Khadka, Bishwombhar Prasad Shrestha and senior advocate Harikrishna Karki.

Former attorney general and senior advocate Karki is in the fifth rank among those recommended by the Judicial Council.

At the meeting of the Special Hearing Committee, the proposed judges presented their views and work plan to make the judiciary clean and independent. They argued that public trust on judiciary should be bolstered and the judiciary equipped with modern technology.

The Committee members had put forth various queries as why the legal system was slow off the mark despite the change in the political and constitutional set up; why many people were still deprived of justice; why judiciary have not embraced transparency. RSS
