NC to remain in opposition: NC new President Deuba

Kathmandu, March 11:  Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that his party would remain in opposition.  Talking to media persons at his own residence at Budhanilkantha today, President Deuba added that his party was not in a hurry to form new government.

The Reporters' Club had organized the programme to extend congratulations to newly elected President Deuba. He added that the incumbent government will displace due to its own burden, adding that his party wanted to play a constructive role remaining in the opposition.

He stated that democracy will be strengthened only when there is a strong opposition. President Deuba further said that national consensus government could be formed on the basis of need and circumstances.

The beautiful side of the democracy is the balance of power therefore NC should remain in opposition, Deuba asserted. Former Prime Minister Deuba said that he would prioritize to strengthen federal democratic republicanism and multiparty system assimilating the party's policy and doctrine.

He further said that the party would pay special attention to resolve province delineation issues and for the stability of democracy and implementation of the constitution.  

In another context, President Deuba said that he will hold discussions with UCPN (Maoist) chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal on the issues related to turning back the recommendation of possible judges made by the Judicial Council.

The Parliament Speaker Onsari Gharti recently returned the recommendation of the judges sent for special hearing in the parliament adding that it failed to follow the procedures.

Leader Deuba added that the Speaker should not have done so, however, it would have been completed soon.  He added that the post of the speaker is respectable and she is an honest adding that someone might have played fault role for drawing her in controversy.    


He said that he felt proud, honoured and accountable to take the responsibility to lead oldest NC which led people’s movements in 2007, 2046 and 2062-63 BS to establish democracy.

“I am NC party President. All party leaders and cadres have rights to raise their voices freely. All can put up their complaints and a sense of injustice. Does not worry all will be treated equally,” he said.

Reminding that he became Prime Minister thrice, he said that the responsibility has fallen on him to take NC ahead united and put things together within the party.

“I was just elected party president. I have got many things from the party. And it is my responsibility to take the party ahead integrated and tackle challenges ahead. So I urge all to help lead the country to prosperity by prevailing peace and strengthening democracy in the country,” he said.

On a different note, Deuba said that there was no alternative to have good relations with our neighbour, indicating to Southern neighbour India.

He said that he was in favour of mending strained relations with India and establishing good relations with Northern neighbour China.

“It is essential to address concerns of both neighbouring countries,” he said.

He also said that a situation to return fund provided by donors for post-quake reconstructions due to the failure to utilise it in time should not be created. RSS
