Environment friendly vehicle policy yet to be implemented

Kathmandu, July 29: The Environment Friendly Vehicle and Transport Policy 2071 is still not being implemented two years after its formulation.

The government introduced the policy to curb pollution and keep the environment clean after which the Environment Protection Committee under the Legislature-Parliament issued instructions for its implementation.

Eight months have elapsed since the instruction from the Committee but the policy is still not being implemented. The Committee plans to summon the concerned officials to renew its directive for implementation, Committee Chairman Janak Raj Chaudhary told the National News Agency (RSS).

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has still not formed the Environment Friendly Vehicle and Transport Operation Committee, Environment Friendly Vehicle and Transport Working Committee and Kathmandu Valley Environment Friendly Vehicle and Transport Management Committee in order to implement the policy.

Ministry's Assistant Spokesperson Sundar Bhattarai said the government is carrying out necessary homework for amendment of Section 39 of Vehicle and Transportation Management Act, 2049 to transform the vehicles running on petrol and diesel into environment friendly mode.

The Kathmandu Sustainable Urban Transportation Project has started work to provide route permit to environment friendly vehicles. RSS
